Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

Universal Electric Corporation is seeking an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist. The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will participate in the creation of and maintain a comprehensive Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) program at Universal Electric Corporation (UEC).

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for ensuring that UEC’s Canonsburg facility is in compliance with all state, federal EHS laws and OSHA regulations
  • Maintain all records and monitor trends related to employee work-related injuries
  • Maintain a safety conscious mindset and identify safety violations and concerns and escalate to management as needed
  • Conduct activities related to environmental compliance, reporting, regulatory permitting, hazardous waste handling, and waste reduction/recycling programs
  • Create and maintain programs and training that maintain a high level of employee awareness to safety and environmental policies and procedures
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database
  • Maintain a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) program and Risk Management Program
  • Chair the Safety Committee
  • Maintain records relating to, but not limited to, mobile equipment PM’s, company vehicle registrations and insurance, respiratory testing, and plant evacuation procedures
  • Schedule plant evacuation trainings
  • Create Safe Systems of Work (SSOW)
  • Prepare and present monthly Safety Initiative programs
  • Report monthly safety metrics
  • Design and Deliver Tool Box Topics
  • Conduct Safety Audits

Additional Duties:

  • Maintain safety program and presence across all shifts
  • Assist Facilities team in executing safety related facilities projects
  • Maintain OSHA 300 logs
  • Update safety postings
  • Maintain PPE inventory
  • Additional duties as required by management

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to host and present safety topics to large groups
  • Knowledge of OSHAS18001

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a safety science related degree or equivalent years of experience
  • 1-3 years’ experience in a safety role in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or demonstrated progress toward such certifications preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

  • This position will have exposure to the manufacturing areas where, under certain areas, the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and mandatory hearing protection are required
  • Ability to stand, bend and walk for extended periods of time
  • Able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds occasionally and up to 25 pounds frequently
  • This position will be exposed to heights over 10 feet off the ground
  • This position will be exposed to confined spaces
